Who can apply

The JATC lists five qualifications: be at least 18; have a high school diploma or GED; be physically fit to do the trade; have an other-than-dishonorable discharge if you served; and be able to pass a drug test and medical exam. [1]

How the program runs

It's a five-year program. Each year is a segment with 2,000 hours of on-the-job training and at least 144 hours of related classroom instruction and independent study. [2]

Alongside on-the-job training, apprentices complete a correspondence course through a nationally recognized college. After a six-month probationary period, apprentices become Local 669 members. [1]

Each step up to the next classification comes with a wage increase until the five years are done. Apprentices take part in a Health and Welfare program with medical coverage and life insurance and start building a pension once they're eligible. [1]

Scale

The JATC says it trains for a membership of more than 10,000 active journeypersons and more than 2,000 apprentices, and offers apprenticeship opportunities in 48 states. [2]
