NICET Fire Alarm Systems (FAS), Levels I to IV
What the Fire Alarm Systems program covers, what each level means and how to earn it, summarized from nicet.org.
What it covers
According to NICET, the Fire Alarm Systems program is for technicians engaged in system layout (plan preparation), equipment selection, installation, acceptance testing, troubleshooting, servicing and technical sales of fire alarm systems. Technical areas include applicable codes and standards, types of detectors and signaling systems, supervision requirements, power requirements, building and occupancy considerations, and basic electricity and electronics.
The four levels
- Level I: Trainees and entry-level technicians who perform limited tasks under frequent supervision.
- Level II: Technicians who perform routine tasks under general daily supervision.
- Level III: Technicians who work independently from standards, plans and specs to produce complete plans for typical systems.
- Level IV: Senior technicians on complex or specialized systems who also supervise others.
Level wording is NICET's general description of its four-level fire protection ladder, as published for Water-Based Systems Layout. Each level's full content outline is on the NICET program page.
How to earn it
For each level you pass an exam or exams, document qualifying work history, perform key role-specific activities, and at Levels III and IV get a personal recommendation. Exams are on computer at Pearson VUE testing centers. Applications are filed in the NICET online portal.
Good to know
- The Level I exam can be taken online with a remote proctor (OnVue), chosen when you schedule.
- Current exams are based on the 2022 edition of NFPA 72. NICET says updated exams based on the 2025 edition will be available around mid-2027 (date not set).
- NICET also offers a separate Inspection and Testing of Fire Alarm Systems (ITFAS) certification for inspectors who focus on periodic inspection and testing and have little experience in other fire alarm work.
