NICET certification guide
What NICET is, the four fire protection programs, how the levels work, and how often our listed employers ask for it (36 of 55 live jobs). Program facts are drawn from nicet.org.
How NICET certification works
NICET (the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies) certifies technicians who design, install, inspect and test fire protection systems. For each level, NICET says, you must pass an exam or exams, complete a work-history description that documents qualifying experience, successfully perform key role-specific activities, and, at Levels III and IV, get a personal recommendation. Exams are taken on a computer at Pearson VUE testing centers. Once earned, certification is maintained through Continuing Professional Development and renewed every three years.
The four fire protection programs
| Program | Levels | Covers |
|---|---|---|
| Fire Alarm Systems (FAS) | I–IV | Design, installation, acceptance testing, troubleshooting and service of fire alarm systems. Current exams are based on the 2022 edition of NFPA 72; NICET says updated exams based on the 2025 edition will arrive around mid-2027. The Level I exam can be taken online with a remote proctor. |
| Inspection & Testing of Fire Alarm Systems (ITFAS) | I–III | For inspectors who focus on periodic fire alarm inspection and testing and have little experience in other alarm work. Exams were updated October 7, 2024. |
| Water-Based Systems Layout (WBSL) | I–IV | Layout and detailing of sprinkler and other water-based systems: plans, hydraulics, equipment selection and codes. Exams were updated July 8, 2024. The Level III hydraulics exam now includes a 15-minute break. |
| Inspection & Testing of Water-Based Systems (ITWBS) | I–III | Inspection and testing of existing sprinkler and water-based systems, mainly to NFPA 25. Levels I and II were updated June 2, 2025, and the updated Level III exam has been available since December 1, 2025. |
What the levels mean
NICET describes the Water-Based Systems Layout levels this way, and the other programs follow a similar ladder:
- Level I: Trainees and entry-level technicians who perform limited tasks under frequent supervision.
- Level II: Technicians who perform routine tasks under general daily supervision.
- Level III: Technicians who work independently from standards, plans and specs to produce complete plans for typical systems.
- Level IV: Senior technicians on complex or specialized systems who also supervise others.
You don't need a lower-level certificate to sit for a higher one, but you must meet the lower levels' requirements first.
