NICET Water-Based Systems Layout (WBSL), Levels I to IV
What the Water-Based Systems Layout program covers, what each level means and how to earn it, summarized from nicet.org.
What it covers
According to NICET, the Water-Based Systems Layout program is for technicians engaged in layout and detailing of sprinkler and other water-based systems that must meet code and statutory requirements, including plan and submittal preparation, equipment selection and technical management of layout projects. Technical areas include types of water-based systems and their components, water supply requirements, hydraulics, building features, hazards and occupancy, installation, inspection and maintenance requirements, codes and standards, and contract administration.
The four levels
- Level I: Trainees and entry-level technicians who perform limited tasks under frequent supervision.
- Level II: Technicians who perform routine tasks under general daily supervision.
- Level III: Technicians who work independently from standards, plans and specs to produce complete plans for typical systems.
- Level IV: Senior technicians on complex or specialized systems who also supervise others.
Level wording is NICET's general description of its four-level fire protection ladder, as published for Water-Based Systems Layout. Each level's full content outline is on the NICET program page.
How to earn it
For each level you pass an exam or exams, document qualifying work history, perform key role-specific activities, and at Levels III and IV get a personal recommendation. Exams are on computer at Pearson VUE testing centers. Applications are filed in the NICET online portal.
