Licensing, as of Nov 4, 2026

North Carolina Fire Sprinkler Inspection Technician license

North Carolina licenses sprinkler inspectors through the State Board of Examiners of Plumbing, Heating and Fire Sprinkler Contractors, which issues a Fire Sprinkler Inspection Technician license.

Two ways in

With NICET: applicants who hold NICET Level II certification can apply on that basis. [1] The Board's exam schedule lists this route as no exam. [2]

The license is for people doing NFPA 25 inspections only. It's a technician license, not a contractor license, so it can't be used to contract for inspection work. [1]

Without NICET: applicants document 4,000 hours (about two years) of experience inspecting and testing previously installed fire sprinkler systems. [1] That route has a 3.0-hour exam. [2]
