Florida regulates fire protection contractors under Chapter 633 of the Florida Statutes, administered by the Division of State Fire Marshal.

Checked Nov 4, 20262 official sources

As of Nov 4, 2026. Rules change, so confirm with the agency before you apply. Numbers in brackets link to the official source for each fact.

Contractor classes

Florida splits fire protection contractors into five classes. Contractor I covers all types of systems; Contractor II covers water-based systems; Contractor III covers chemical and gaseous systems; Contractor IV covers sprinkler systems in one- and two-family dwellings under NFPA 13D; and Contractor V covers underground piping. [1]

Inspecting as an employee

Anyone employed by a Contractor I or II who will inspect water-based fire protection systems needs a permit from the Division. The permit is only good for work for the certificate holder named on it. [2]

While inspecting, a permit holder has to have the permit on them and carry a photo ID card prescribed by the State Fire Marshal, and show either on request. [2]

What we couldn't confirm

The specific NICET level the Division requires for an inspector permit is set in the Florida Administrative Code. We couldn't confirm it on an official site during this check, so we've left it out. Ask the employer or the Division directly.

Questions

Do Florida sprinkler inspectors need a permit?

Yes, if they work for a Contractor I or II and inspect water-based systems. Florida Statute 633.318 requires a permit tied to the employer named on it.

Can I take my Florida inspector permit to a new employer?

Not as-is. The statute says the permit is valid only for work for the certificate holder named on it.
